Over 200 women took part in the 'Women on Wheels' ladies charity cycle ride in Bury St Edmunds yesterday in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care.
Now in it's fourth year, the Women on Wheels cycle ride, known as the WOW Ride for short, is a fantastic initiative to encourage women and girls to get on their bikes, experience the benefits of cycling and see what fun it can be. It's aimed at women cyclists only, new or experienced, young and old, to challenge themselves around some beautiful local routes and all monies raised will again go to a very worthwhile local charity, St Nicholas Hospice Care, Bury St Edmunds.
The event is organised by Abbeycroft Leisure in partnership with Suffolk County Council and was sponsored again this year by specialist bike retailer Revel Outdoors.
The event started in Nowton Park, Bury St Edmunds and this year participants could choose from either the 10, 25, 50 or 75 mile route. The 10 and 70 mile routes were new additions this year.
Jo Churchill, Member of Parliament for Bury St Edmunds, joined ladies at Nowton Park for the start of the event and said "Women on Wheels is such a wonderful community event giving ladies a chance to raise money for a very worthwhile cause and at the same time encouraging them to get active" She added "This event is a great example of partnership working and as always, it wouldn't happen without the hard work of the organisers and of course the dedication of local volunteers"
Alison Blackwell, Abbeycroft Leisure's Development Director, said: "We were thrilled with the positive response to this year's event which is growing every year. There were so many ladies out on their bikes, having a good time and enjoying the lovely weather. Cycling is a great way to appreciate our beautiful county and this event helps us in our ambition to become England's Most Active County".
George Chilvers, Community Fundraiser, St Nicholas Hospice Care said "We were delighted to have had a record number of women sign up for this years Women On Wheels; with 227 women registered it was a great day and will have raised vital funds for St Nicholas Hopsice Care. Every day the hospice has to raise over £11,000 so its thanks to events like Women on Wheels that we can continue offering so vital services across West Suffolk and Thetford".
"A massive thank you to all the cyclists and volunteers for helping make the event so successful"
Owner of Revel Outdoors, Sarah Wightman said "We are delighted to be involved with this event, which is growing year on year. The WOW event is relaxed and friendly, with a great supportive atmosphere – ideal for encouraging and supporting women to get out on their bike or ride that bit further. It's rewarding to see many new riders each year, as well as repeat participants who have grown in confidence and fitness and are riding the longer distances. We are looking forward to next year's event already!"
There are still three more Women on Wheels events planned in Suffolk later this year at Sudbury, Debenham and Rendlesham. To find out more visit http://www.wowsuffolk.org.uk
