Suffolk awarded another London 2012 Inspire Mark

"Suffolk Celebrates London 2012 Open Weekend" has become the latest Suffolk project to be awarded a coveted London 2012 Inspire Mark.

Open Weekend 2010 takes place from 23-25th July and will include hundreds of cultural events across the UK. Suffolk’s response to this celebration is a fantastic range of events planned across the county, each one offering a unique opportunity for the community to join in and take part.

With 55 events taking place across Suffolk local people will have the opportunity to sail on a keelboat, enjoy a ‘Last night of the Proms’ style concert, take the family on a fun cycle treasure hunt or enjoy a showcase event for disabled people to get involved in sport. They will be able to try petanque, bowls, circus skills, canoeing, salsa dancing and even take part in the Vegetable Games. They can watch street performers, street theatre and draw, paint or photograph a moment in time.

Councillor Rosemary Clarke, Suffolk County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Sport, Culture, Diversity, Health and Wellbeing said, “With just two years to go until the start of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Open Weekend is a wonderful opportunity for people and communities to share in the excitement of the build up to the Games. With over 25,000 people taking part in events across the county, these countdown celebrations are all about activities that happen close to home; a chance to see places in a new light and try things they’ve never done before

Councillor Doreen Savage, Chair of the Community Cohesion and Inclusion Delivery Partnership said, “Open Weekend has provided the opportunity for communities and organisations across the county to come up with some wonderful creative ways to bring people together. The range of events means there will be something to suit everyone across the county during the weekend”.
