Alex Dunbar won the men’s race in the British Colleges Sport (BCS) East Region Cross Country championships held at Easton College.

Alex, from Barningham, is in the first year of the National Diploma Sports and Exercise Science at West Suffolk College.

He beat 44 other competitors from 10 other colleges, qualifying to represent the East Region at the BCS National Championship at Loughborough University in April 2010.

Alex led from the start and completed the 5 mile course in 25 minutes and 9 seconds, almost a full minute ahead of the runner up. Alex is a member of the West Suffolk Athletics Club.

Earlier in the year he broke the West Suffolk College ‘bleep test’ record that had stood for six years when he reached 15.4 on the fitness test that will be familiar to many sports people.

Sports Academy Manager Neil Reader commented, “It is a phenomenal achievement by Alex. In past years we as a college have excelled at Football and Rugby but it is very pleasing we are beginning to achieve success at other sports. Hopefully this is only the start for Alex and he will go on and do well in the National Championships in April.”
