Golf
Partnership Established
After a number of meetings and three
workshops held around the county, the Suffolk Golf Partnership has
been established. Suffolk is one of many County Golf Partnerships
that are developing throughout England with the aim of bringing
together the three main golfing organisations, the English Golf
Union (EGU), English Womens Golf Association (EWGA) and the
Professional Golfers Association (PGA), with support from the Golf
Foundation and Sport England.
Amongst the main aims of the Suffolk Golf
Partnership are :
- To promote the game of golf and increase peoples awareness of golf in Suffolk
- To attract more people to the sport of golf irrespective of ability, age, gender or race
- To increase the number of players playing golf in Suffolk
- To assist Suffolk golf clubs to increase their membership numbers
- To facilitate links between golf clubs and schools to enable golf to become a core sport in Suffolk schools

At a local level the idea is to utilize
combined knowledge, experience and resources to support golf within
the county. There will be considerable benefit to the game by
getting all the golfing organizations to work together as a team.
Through this joint approach Golf in Suffolk has greater potential
to draw in external support in particular through Sport England and
Suffolk Sport, the County Sports Partnership. This approach is
integral to England Golf Partnerships vision to Grow the game. The
English Golf Union has a vision to be the leading golf nation by
2020.
The Next Step
There has been unanimous support for
the formation of the Suffolk Golf Partnership. Building on
information gathered from people who attended the three workshops a
draft Development Plan for Suffolk Golf will be produced. This will
be circulated widely with in the sport across the county for
further views before submission to the England Golf Partnership for
funding to address priorities for moving the game forward in the
county.
A strong message coming from clubs through
the workshops is the need to promote golf more effectively with the
general public and to engage with community partners. Views and
ideas from outside the game are also welcomed to feed into the
planning process.
The Suffolk Golf Partnership has a committee that has two representatives from each of the three main golfing organizations in Suffolk, The Suffolk Golf Union, The Suffolk Ladies Golf Association and the Suffolk PGA.
