Disability Sport Events launch new Nationwide DSE awards
25 September 2006

DISABILITY SPORT EVENTS is proud to announce today the launch of the additional Nationwide Sports Awards 2006. These will give volunteers and competitors in disability sport the unique opportunity to win financial assistance for their own or others talent.

Following the recent success of the Society's AGM initiative, which raised £100,000 for DSE, new awards have been added to the firmly established Nationwide Junior Sports Awards. These are REGIONAL SPORTS PERSON, REGIONAL VOLUNTEER and RISING STAR AWARD. Entry forms are now available on DSE's official website www.disabilitysport.org.uk

The Regional Sports Person and Regional Volunteer awards are for competitors or volunteers who take part in DSE regional, national or international events. It is open to any age group from 10 years old onwards and to all home countries- England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. A cash prize of £500 will be awarded to the chosen winner from each of the twelve regions. All the regional winners will be judged for the NATIONAL AWARD for one overall sports person and volunteer. These two winners will be awarded £1,000 each. The sports person will use it for their own sports development, whereas the volunteer can donate it to the disability sports club of their choice. This gives entrants the opportunity to win up to £1,500 in total.

The Nationwide Rising Star Award is an amazing new award with a cash prize of £6,000! The individual winner will be a future star in disability sport, who has outstanding talent and is destined for the international medal podium in the next few years. The money will be used for sport development purposes and assist one of this country's finest with equipment, travelling to events or training costs.

Excited at the prospect of these awards, Gordon Neale OBE Director of Events for DSE commented: "This has been an exciting year for DSE and we are very pleased for our competitors and volunteers reap the benefits of Nationwide's generosity. Disability Sport is still primarily under funded and our competitors constantly have to use their own money to excel in their chosen sport. Our volunteers are the lifeblood of the organisation and without them our events would not exist. These awards are what sport is all about- funding the stars of the future and encouraging volunteers who give up their time and energy year after year."

All winners will be invited to the exclusive Nationwide DSE Sports Awards reception at Lancashire County Cricket Club on Thursday 7th December.
