London 2012 Roadshow targets Suffolk

Thursday, 31 May 2007

The London 2012 Roadshow due to be launched next month (June 2007) - has selected Suffolk as one of the counties it will visit this summer to promote participation in sport.

The Roadshow is an annual event to encourage people right across the country to get involved with the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

The special branded Roadshow bus will visit the Suffolk Youth Games to be held at Bury St Edmunds on Sunday 8 July one of 27 stops in a ten-week tour of the UK.

The theme of this years summer Roadshow is Join In - encouraging sports participation, particularly amongst young people, and coaching. The organisers are the London 2012 Organising Committee, the Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS), Sport England and national sports councils in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and The National Lottery.

At the Suffolk Youth Games and the other 26 stops on the UK tour - the Roadshow will offer taster sessions in a range of traditional and exciting new sports for visitors to try. Professional sports advisors will be on hand to encourage visitors to find out more about local sporting clubs and facilities.

The Roadshow will also contain a National Lottery Dream Statistics zone, to enable visitors to see how their statistics including height, weight, and muscle power might make them suited to different sports.

The 2007 Suffolk Youth Games will be held at Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre and King Edward VI School from 10am to 5pm on Sunday 8 July. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

The county youth games, now in its eighth year, will involve up to 1000 young people from across Suffolk in an inter-district competition across 8 sports and both athletics and swimming will include competition for disabled competitors.

Alongside the competition - and the 2012 Roadshow - there will be lots more opportunities to taste a range of demonstration sports. There will also be the traditional opening and closing ceremonies to celebrate the success and participation of all competitors.

The local partnerships delivering the event are Suffolk Sport and the Suffolk Strategic Group for the London 2012 Games

Derek Bowden, Chair of the Suffolk Strategic Group for the London 2012 Games commented:

We are delighted that the London 2012 Roadshow is visiting Suffolk and particularly the Suffolk Youth Games. Our event is a great annual showcase for the opportunities to take part in sport and active leisure pursuits in the county.

London 2012 Chair Sebastian Coe commented:

The London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are the UKs Games. This years Roadshow will show the whole country how everyone can be part of the 2012 Games, and everyone can benefit from the legacy long after the final race has been won.

Improving sports participation has long been one of our most important legacy objectives from the Games, and this years Roadshow will focus on just that. Every visitor at every event will have a range of opportunities to try new sports and learn about sports facilities in their local area. This country already has a passion for sport and deepening that passion for playing sport and coaching sport will be an important legacy which will outlast us all.

Notes to Editors:
  • The London 2012 Roadshow will be launched on 13 June at Tower Bridge, London. The national tour will kick off on 15 June in Greenwich.
  • The special branded Roadshow bus will visit Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and each of the nine regions within England, ending its journey in Stoke Mandeville on 29 August - marking five years to go to the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
  • National Lottery funding will contribute up to £2.2 billion* towards the cost of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympics Games.  £750 million of Good Causes money raised by sales of designated lottery games, such as the draw-based game Dream Number and certain scratch cards and interactive games, will go towards funding the provision of facilities and supporting infrastructure of the 2012 Games.
