Case Study - Football

Mentor profile
Glen Parker is a level 3 football coach and also has coaching qualifications in basketball and athletics.  He is employed as a Community Sports Coach with Babergh District Council, and has been involved in the Countys mentoring programme since March 2005.
In this time he has provided mentoring for a great number of individuals, from a range of differing background and sports.  Glen's focus is to try and give support to the young Junior Football Organisers (JFOs) and to level 1 coaches by pointing them in the right direction and assisting them in learning to structure and evaluate their coaching sessions.

Mentoring relationships
Glen worked with a young football enthusiast who played for a local team and was interested in getting involved in coaching.  By signposting this individual to complete the JFO course, Glen enabled this individual to take his first step onto the coaching ladder.  Following attendance at this course, the individual began to use the skills gained on the JFO course and began to assist Glen in the delivery of Samba Soccer Skills sessions.  By doing this, Glen enabled the young coach to gain the confidence and experience that was needed to take them to the next step on the ladder, the FA Level 1 coaching certificate.

Achieving success
Through Glen's support as a mentor, the coach has developed himself through many sessions, and has gained a great deal of confidence in his own abilities.  He has successfully completed and passed the level 1 certificate and is now waiting to attend the first aid and child protection elements of the course.

The coach has also demonstrated a commitment to volunteering and further developing his qualifications, and as a result has been funded by Babergh District Council, where he has now also been taken on to work as a paid coach on summer activities.

Quotes of the relationship
Glen - "Failure to plan is planning to fail"
The coach - "Keep it simple and follow your plan"
