Develop your coaching
Coach Development is the process that coaches undertake in order to improve their coaching knowledge, skills, qualities and experience. In order to develop as a coach we need to first address what training and support we need to improve. This can be achieved through a Training Needs Analysis.
What is a Training Needs
Analysis (TNA)?
As coaches we are always encouraging our players to try new
training in order to develop/improve their performance; but have
you ever stopped to think what training/support you need as a coach
in order to improve your performance?
A TNA helps you reflect on where you are and where you want to
go. The main focus of the TNA is to identify what training, support
and guidance you need in order to achieve your coaching
goals.
This information can then be recorded in a Personal
Development Plan (PDP) to give you clear coaching goals and
increased motivation.
What is a Personal Development
Plan (PDP)?
As coaches, every year we will set our performers goals in
order to help them to improve. In many cases
this information is recorded in the form of a year plan for the
performer.
A PDP is very similar; it will allow all the information from
the TNA to be recorded in to a long term plan for your coach
development.
Why do I need a
PDP?
As coaches we always look to develop our athletes and help
them plan for the future, but we rarely consider our own
development.
Imagine if we were to improve ourselves as coaches, this will
not only improve our coaching but also the athletes we coach.
Identifying gaps in your coaching knowledge / experience can
lead to further qualifications and job opportunities.

When working through the remainder of this document, it is
important that the goals set can be considered as being SMARTER.
This means that they are:
Specific directly relevant to the
coachs needs
Measurable can be measured and
assessed
Acceptable achievable in the coachs
eyes
Realistic challenging but
achievable
Time-phased have timescales by when
they should be achieved
Exciting the coach should be
inspired by the goal
Recorded written down to refer
to
Once you have set your goals, think about what
barriers may prevent you from achieving these goals, and how you
can overcome these.
